Background of the Study

The rapid advancement of digital technology and the widespread accessibility of the internet have brought about significant changes in the way news is produced, distributed, and consumed. One of the most profound developments in the media landscape has been the emergence of citizen journalism. Citizen journalism refers to the act of non-professional individuals engaging in the processes of collecting, reporting, analyzing, and disseminating news and information. This phenomenon has gained substantial traction, particularly with the proliferation of smartphones and social media platforms, which have democratized the flow of information and empowered ordinary citizens to participate in the journalistic process (Allan, 2017).

Historically, journalism has been the domain of trained professionals working within established news organizations. These journalists adhere to strict ethical standards and professional practices, including fact-checking, source verification, and editorial oversight. However, the rise of citizen journalism has disrupted this traditional model, blurring the lines between professional journalism and amateur reporting. Citizen journalists can capture and share newsworthy events in real time, often providing immediate and unfiltered accounts of incidents as they unfold (Hermida, 2016). The impact of citizen journalism is particularly evident in regions where access to traditional media is limited or where state-controlled media may restrict the flow of information. In such contexts, citizen journalists have emerged as crucial alternative sources of news, offering diverse perspectives and highlighting issues that may be underreported by mainstream media. For example, during political uprisings, natural disasters, or other crises, citizen journalists have provided invaluable on-the-ground coverage, often at great personal risk (Carlson, 2018).

In Nigeria, the influence of citizen journalism has been increasingly notable, especially in states like Cross River where mainstream media outlets may not have extensive reach. Citizen journalists in Cross River State have played a vital role in bringing local issues to the forefront, engaging the community, and holding authorities accountable. Their contributions have helped to enhance the diversity of news sources and foster greater public participation in the journalistic process. However, this rise in citizen journalism has also presented significant challenges, particularly concerning the credibility, accuracy, and ethical standards of the information being disseminated. One of the primary advantages of citizen journalism is its ability to provide real-time coverage of events. Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have enabled individuals to share news instantly, often faster than traditional news organizations. This immediacy is particularly valuable during emergencies or rapidly evolving situations where timely information is critical. Additionally, citizen journalism has democratized the production of news, allowing marginalized voices to be heard and providing a platform for diverse perspectives that may be overlooked by mainstream media (Hermida, 2016).

Despite these benefits, the rise of citizen journalism has raised several concerns. A major issue is the credibility and reliability of the information provided by citizen journalists. Unlike professional journalists, citizen journalists may lack formal training in journalistic ethics and practices. This can result in the dissemination of unverified or biased information, contributing to the spread of misinformation and fake news. The absence of editorial oversight and fact-checking mechanisms further exacerbates this problem, making it challenging for audiences to distinguish between accurate news and false information (Carlson, 2018). Moreover, the rise of citizen journalism has had significant implications for professional journalists and traditional news organizations. The increasing competition from citizen journalists has pressured professional journalists to adapt to the fast-paced digital environment and to incorporate new tools and techniques into their reporting. This has led to a reevaluation of journalistic practices and the need to balance speed with accuracy and ethical standards. Additionally, the proliferation of user-generated content has raised questions about the economic sustainability of traditional news organizations, as audiences increasingly turn to free online sources for news (Singer, 2018).

In Cross River State, the dynamics of citizen journalism reflect broader trends observed across Nigeria and other developing countries. The state's diverse and vibrant community has embraced digital tools to share news and information, often filling the gaps left by traditional media. Citizen journalists in Cross River State have reported on a wide range of issues, from political events and social movements to local stories and cultural events. Their contributions have enriched the media landscape and provided valuable insights into the everyday lives of the people in the state (Ogunyemi, 2020). However, the rise of citizen journalism in Cross River State also underscores the need for media literacy and the promotion of ethical journalism. As more individuals participate in the journalistic process, it is essential to educate the public about the importance of verifying information and adhering to ethical standards. This can help mitigate the risks associated with misinformation and ensure that the benefits of citizen journalism are maximized. Furthermore, there is a need for policies and frameworks that support the coexistence of professional and citizen journalism, fostering a collaborative approach that enhances the overall quality and diversity of news (Allan, 2017). Thus, the rise of citizen journalism represents a significant shift in the media landscape, driven by technological advancements and the increasing accessibility of digital tools. While it offers numerous benefits, including real-time coverage and the democratization of news production, it also poses challenges related to credibility, accuracy, and the professional practice of journalism. In Cross River State, the impact of citizen journalism is evident, reflecting broader trends observed in Nigeria and other developing countries. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for assessing the implications of citizen journalism on news reportage and for developing strategies that enhance the quality and reliability of information in the digital age.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rise of citizen journalism has introduced both opportunities and challenges for news reportage in Cross River State, Nigeria. While citizen journalists have enhanced the diversity of news sources and provided immediate coverage of local events, their activities raise concerns regarding the accuracy, credibility, and ethical standards of the information disseminated. Traditional journalists are now compelled to compete with and adapt to the presence of citizen journalists, which has led to a significant shift in the media landscape. This study aims to explore the impact of citizen journalism on professional news reportage in Cross River State, examining the perceptions and experiences of journalists in this region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the impact of citizen journalism in the context of a developing country, specifically within Cross River State, Nigeria. Understanding these dynamics can inform media policies and practices that enhance the credibility and reliability of news reportage. Secondly, the findings of this study will provide valuable insights for professional journalists, media organizations, and policymakers on how to navigate the challenges posed by citizen journalism while leveraging its benefits. Finally, this study will highlight the importance of media literacy and ethical journalism, promoting a more informed and engaged public.

1.6 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to Cross River State, Nigeria, and focuses on the perceptions and experiences of professional journalists regarding the rise of citizen journalism. The study will employ qualitative and quantitative research methods, including surveys and interviews with journalists working in the state. One limitation of the study is that it may not fully capture the perspectives of citizen journalists themselves, as the focus is primarily on professional journalists. Additionally, the rapidly evolving nature of digital media means that the findings may become outdated as new technologies and platforms emerge.
